We are talking about playing truant, going out for a pint, snatching… in short, running away from school. It is when a child decides unilaterally not to attend class without an apparent reason that justifies that decision.

Normally, children miss class to avoid facing a difficult situation that is going to take place at school during that day, such as taking an exam, presenting a work, sharing homework, giving an oral presentation, seeing friends. with whom it has been discussed, interact with teachers with whom there is not a good relationship, etc. However, there are also children whose goal they pursue playing hooky is simply to stay home to have fun doing activities such as watching TV, playing video games, sleeping, etc. But, How to detect from school that children are running away from class?

When the child plays truant or runs away from class frequently, we would be talking about truancy. Nowadays we know that missing class is directly related to a drop in the child's academic performance, so it is a situation that deserves special attention from parents and teachers.

Being a teacher is not an easy task since they are not limited to teaching the corresponding subjects but their work goes much further.

They are continuously observing the children and supervising what happens in the classroom. They offer support to those students who at a certain moment may encounter difficulties or problems at school, they help them resolve conflicts they may encounter, they encourage them to have fun learning and they favor adequate coexistence in the classroom.

It is important for teachers to be alert and detect if children are playing truant or eloping from class, so that the frequency of absences does not increase and it becomes a problem of truancy, or if, on the contrary, they have missed class for any justified reason.

If a child is absent only once, it should not be given more importance. However, if the child is absent more than two or three times, in a short period of time, the teacher should first talk to the parents to find out why. And, secondly, if there is no clear reason, it is recommended that the teacher ask himself a series of questions:

- Is it possible that the child is running away from class?

- What could have motivated the child not to attend school?

- Is it possible that he played truant to avoid an exam or any other situation in which he was going to be evaluated?

- Could it be that he has difficulties with his companions?

- Is there a teacher with whom you do not have an adequate relationship or with whom you have had a discussion?

- Is it possible that he has learning difficulties?

If the teacher comes to the conclusion that the child has been truant for any of these reasons, the most appropriate thing is to have a relaxed conversation with the child with the aim of offering your help to look for solutions to what worries or prevents you from going to school normally.
